Biography

As a cellist and cello teacher in Markham and Toronto, Aaron Wong combines extensive professional experience in performance, teaching, and arts administration to inform a research-driven, holistic pedagogy. A member of the first cohort of junior students at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, he further studied under Stephen Kates at Peabody and Zara Nelsova at Juilliard, all on full scholarship. His performance credits include Lincoln Center, Suntory Hall, Glenn Gould Studio, and major arts festivals.

With over twenty years in arts management at the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, ICM Artists, and the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Aaron brings invaluable industry insight to his teaching. His graduate studies at Yale University and Boston University included focused work on performance and ritual theories, providing a rich intellectual foundation for his research and pedagogy. Additionally, his interests in performance, positive psychology, and Baduanjin shape his approach to sustainable practice habits and a resilient performance mentality.

Aaron’s approach is built on incremental, daily improvements, ritualized practice, and a supportive studio environment that fosters meaningful artistic growth. He has taught graduate courses, coached chamber ensembles and youth orchestras, and enjoys a growing studio of students of all ages and levels, both in person and online. He teaches in English and Cantonese and can converse in Mandarin Chinese.

Aaron’s rare combination of rigorous musical training, scholarly research, and industry experience enables him to guide each student not only toward musical maturity and creative confidence but also to develop skills and habits that foster lifelong learning and achievement. He is passionate about helping each student discover their unique voice on the cello and believes that music learning should inspire curiosity, confidence, and joy both in and beyond the studio.
